Supporting Pets and Families Through Hardship

At Richmond Animal Hospital, we believe pets are family. We also understand that unexpected medical care can place significant stress on families, rescue organizations, and community members facing hardship.

That is why we are proud to introduce The Legacy Fund, our nonprofit initiative established in partnership with the Veterinary Care Foundation, a registered 501(c)(3) charitable organization dedicated to helping veterinary practices provide essential and compassionate care to pets in need.

The Legacy Fund was created to support local families, rescue groups, and hardship cases by helping provide access to critical veterinary care when it is needed most.

Why “The Legacy Fund”?

The Legacy Fund is named in honor of the people who helped shape Richmond Animal Hospital and inspired Dr. Nicholas Sherman throughout his journey in veterinary medicine.

This includes:

  • Dr. Sherman’s grandfather, the late Dr. Lawrence Sherman, who inspired his passion for veterinary medicine and co-owned a successful clinic in northern New York for many years.
  • Greg and Deb Sherman, whose unwavering support helped encourage and guide Dr. Sherman’s path.
  • Dr. Dan Hament, one of the founders of Richmond Animal Hospital, who dedicated 37 years to caring for the Richmond community before transitioning ownership to Dr. Sherman in late 2025.

The fund also represents a commitment to future generations of veterinary care, community support, and compassionate medicine.

How the Fund Helps

The Legacy Fund is designed to help support:

Families facing financial hardship

Rescue organizations and animal welfare groups

Pets requiring urgent or essential medical care

Community-centered veterinary assistance initiatives

Unlike many charitable organizations, 100% of every contribution made through the Veterinary Care Foundation goes directly toward helping pets and improving quality of life. Operational expenses for the Foundation are covered separately through membership dues paid by participating veterinary practices.

This means donations made to The Legacy Fund directly support care for animals in need within our local community.

Built for the Community We Love

The Sherman family is proud to establish The Legacy Fund as part of Richmond Animal Hospital’s continued commitment to compassionate, community-focused veterinary care.

We are deeply grateful to the families who have trusted us with the care of their pets and are excited to continue growing alongside the Richmond community for years to come.

More information about donations, eligibility, and ways to support the fund will be announced soon.
